ABOUT US

mission and ethos

African Art Scene is founded by Chantel Woodman, who is a practicing artist herself and who understands the formalities and structure of living a creative life successfully. As a woman of colour she leads the company through forward-thinking and a creative output that holds true to the needs of an art industry that requires challenges and questions in today’s Africa. Chantel’s passion for her country and its people fuel the company’s mission to create an inclusive, creative platform providing support and guidance to artists and encouraging art collections that showcase Africa’s finest art.

With this driving force an art consultancy was formed providing informed and considered guidance to clients wanting to build or begin an African Art Collection. The issue of accessibility in the art world is an ongoing one, discerning your aesthetic tastes and preferences and thoughtfully implementing this by making valuable and lasting decisions on art acquisition. African Art Scene aims to share a network of knowledge and experience that has been developed over time, with the help of Africa’s most exciting and sought-after artists as well as a dynamic, creative-driven team.

This is done through focusing on sustaining solid relationships with artists. At African Art Scene, immense time and energy is put into understanding and growing with our artists, our sense of their practices and careers is an integral part of being able to adequately consult and advise on the acquisition of their work. We do this through regular studio visits and attendance of their participation in exhibitions or projects. Frequent visits to Johannesburg, Ghana and abroad mean that this is achieved with our artists who are not Cape Town based.

The aim is not to provide representation as galleries offer, but rather to provide a meaningful and enriching platform of support. Our artists are able to utilise our resources to enhance and propel their careers in the ways that they want. Our team extends this support through the building of catalogues and artist texts as well as expanding their work accessibility and networks.

With this strong and clear foundation in mind, African Art Scene is able provide step by step consulting to people interested in building or beginning their art collections. Understanding not only the personal preferences of the clients but also their desire and overall vision for art acquisition. As the acting intermediaries between the art exchange it is just as important for us to understand the clients vision as it is the artist’s vision.

With these elements in place, we can auspiciously recommend artists and specific works to you, using our extensive database that also works closely with various iconic galleries. Through the work we do on the ground we are able to present a holistic picture of the artist that assists in making the right decision to acquire an artwork. We feel that our services create a wider potential audience who might not necessarily begin their journey’s of collecting, without the fundamental knowledge that is needed when navigating the art world. Once the decision is made, the process of the acquisition happens easily with our guidance and support, ensuring all parties are satisfied.
